Profile

John Baker is a prolific artist with a special interest in archaeological subject matter and medieval history. He travels widely in search of inspiration for his work, in the UK, Europe and North Africa.

He works mainly in watercolour, incorporating mixed media including ink, gouache, wax, chalk and collage. He chooses his media to best suit his theme, whether it be Pagan and Christian megaliths and carvings or contemporary subjects.

He developed his distinctive style from a young age influenced by his school art teacher and artistic mentor Jim Riddock and the artist Jack Taylor. He is inspired by Marc Chagall, Graham Sutherland and the romantics: William Blake; Samuel Palmer and François Boucher.
He exhibits regularly in the UK and abroad and has undertaken commissions for Maidstone Television Studios, Hyperion Records and a growing number of private patrons.

More recently he has been working with Royal Borough of Greenwich to promote art and sports to school children – particularly the 2012 London Olympics. He has first hand experience having competed for Great Britain in the 1972 Munich Olympic Games as a springboard diver.
